Does silver change color or rust?
The silver color is the original color of silver. It does not change or rust. It needs constant care and must be protected from perfumes so that its shine does not fade over time.
Often, after a period of use, you will notice that the color of your jewelry changes to black or gold, or that its color fades. Do not worry, this is normal due to oxidation, and once it is cleaned, it will return to its original condition.
Why does silver jewelry worn on the body turn black?
Causes of blackening of silver jewelry:
(1) Personal physical reasons
Endocrine conditions vary from person to person. Some people's sweat contains more acids, while others contain less, and some people's body fluids contain relatively high levels of sulfur. These are the substances that cause the surface of silver jewelry to turn black, so the results of wearing jewelry will vary. Some people may wear it for half a year and it will still look new.
(2) The nature of silver itself
Sulfur, nitric acid, oxides in the air, and other substances (such as eggs and cosmetics) have an oxidizing effect on silver. If silver jewelry is worn for a long time, the combination of sulfur and silver will form a black layer (silver sulfide) on the surface of the silver jewelry.
(3) Blackening process
Small black spots begin to appear on silver pieces, which then spread to form a black layer on the piece, affecting the surface shine of the silver jewelry. People often think that the color has changed. This is incorrect. It is just an outer black layer caused by oxidation, and it disappears with polishing.
How do I maintain and polish silver jewelry?
High temperature and vigorous washing can cause discoloration and damage to silver.
When not wearing, keep it in a closed plastic bag (to protect it from moisture and oxidation)*
It is best to remove the piece when exposed to perfumes, chlorine and salty sea water to prevent it from oxidizing.
When storing, it is preferable to separate the pieces so that they do not get scratched and store them in a dry, closed place.
It is preferable to clean the pieces from time to time with a soft cloth.
Chalk: Place a piece of chalk in the box with the jewelry to absorb moisture.
(Change it every 2-3 months)
